An Act Regarding Low Income Elders and Persons with Disabilities
“An Act Regarding Low Income Elders and Persons with Disabilities” calls for implementing a three pronged approach aimed at maximizing benefits for this vulnerable population in order to help these households to stabilize their housing situations.
- Increase the amount of the monthly EAEDC grant to help the 5,000 elders and 12,000 people with disabilities that rely on the program to remain housed and to meet their basic needs.
- Provide legal and other assistance to EAEDC recipients to facilitate their movement onto Federal Social Security benefits (Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Old Age and Disability Benefits). Recipients who successfully convert to SSI/SSDI receive better income and health benefits and the state receives federal reimbursement for its EAEDC payments to these recipients.
- Expand Food Stamp outreach efforts to elders and people with disabilities to encourage their enrollment in the program and help them maximize their Food Stamp benefits through increased use of medical deductions for un-reimbursed medical expenses.
