Families who meet ALLof these requirements can still be denied shelter for the following reasons:

Examples of families affected by these rules
  • Family was offered emergency assistance for shelter within past 12 months
  • Families who accepted a doubled-up offer made after they were placed in shelter in order to stay close to their children’s school, medical care, job and vital supports but whose situation fell apart before they were able to find alternative housing.
  • Family was evicted from public or subsidized housing for nonpayment of rent
  • Families who fell behind in rent due to a sudden job loss, loss of a care-taking spouse or other circumstances, and who did not know they could request a rent adjustment or who could not carry out the steps needed to get one.
  • Families with mobile certificates who were evicted for non-payment because they withheld rent to force the landlord to correct code violations or to pay for the repairs themselves.
  • Family did not cooperate with DTA housing search prior to placement
  • Working families who conducted housing search on their own but could not make the meetings with their housing worker because they could not take time off from work.
  • Family was evicted from housing because of destruction of property or criminal activity
  • Families evicted for destruction of property caused by an emotionally disturbed child.
  • Families charged with destruction of property after reporting the landlord for code violations.
  • Family rendered itself homeless
  • Families who left their apartment when their landlord asked them to leave and did not wait for eviction proceedings.
