Did you know that today one in every five children in Massachusetts is living in poverty? This is a staggering statistic that only begins to tell the story. For the majority of these children, graduating from high school offers them their best opportunity to escape living in poverty as an adult. In order to break the cycle of poverty, we know we have to give these children all the tools they need to assist them in their education. One of these is simply a good bed.

On May 10, 2012, at the Boston Harbor Hotel on Rowes Wharf, the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless will host the A Bed for Every Child Gala. Featured speaker will be former Celtic Chris Herren the subject of ESPN 30 for 30’s critically acclaimed documentary “Unguarded” and the author of “Basketball Junkie” to share his inspirational story. Kiss 108 FM’s Billy Costa has also agreed to join us as Masters of Ceremonies.

The Coalition has recently launched A Bed for Every Child campaign with the goal of raising $400,000 over the next several months to distribute 1,500 beds and linens for students without one. Please join the in helping the Coalition to reach their goal, which is extremely achievable and will have a long lasting impact on a child’s life.

Annually, the Coalition assist thousands of families who are at risk of homelessness through their HomeLink Initiative which partners with public schools, community health centers and early intervention to reach households in need. Through this the partnership with schools, the Coalition has learned that many students do not have a bed, and are sleeping on the floor or with a sibling. Many of the students’ families have had an infestation of bed bugs – a growing epidemic in many urban areas – forcing them to throw out their beds without being able to afford to buy new ones. For others, their families are simply too poor to buy a bed at all.
